I-40 Cary-Raleigh widening included in draft TIP
We all know that the Triangle's "Main Street" is Interstate 40. Unfortunately, we all know that the four-lane section between Cary and Raleigh (two lanes each way) is a daily source of congestion and frustration for thousands of motorists. In 2007, the Alliance suggested a six-lane footprint as a way to accelerate the widening of this critical bottleneck. The NC DOT 2008-2015 draft TIP includes the six-lane footprint endorsed by the Capital Area MPO and supported by our area Board of Transportation members. “The Regional Transportation Alliance suggestion was very helpful and I would like to thank the business community for their support of this congestion-relieving project,” said Ken Spaulding, NCDOT Division 5 board member. “Input from the motoring public is always welcome on key projects such as the I-40/I-540 interchange improvements that are also funded in the draft TIP.”
The Alliance salutes NCDOT board members Ken Spaulding and Nina Szlosberg, NC DOT Secretary Lyndo Tippett, Highway Division 5 Engineer Wally Bowman, PE, other NCDOT board and staff members, our area metropolitan planning organizations, and local and state elected officials for their efforts in accelerating these key projects!
