21st Century Transportation Committee

On October 29, 2007, the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate created a 24-member 21st Century Transportation Committee committee to deal with the transportation challenges facing our growing state. The members of the group are charged with considering a variety of funding and policy issues facing transportation in North Carolina (click and scroll down to page two). They are slated to study the current condition and future needs of the North Carolina transportation system in both urban and rural areas. They will also evaluate innovative funding and financing methods across all levels of government, along with the division of responsibility among those various governmental levels, as they address a host of issues including urban highway congestion and metropolitan public transit needs.

Five members of the group are from the Triangle area:

Brad Wilson, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Chair of the 21st Century Transportation Committee

Stephen Zelnak, Jr., Martin Marietta Materials

Senator Richard Stevens

Nina Szlosberg, member, NC Board of Transportation

George W. Miller, Jr., former legislator

The Committee's members will develop a series of interim (by May 2008) and final (by December 2008) recommendations to the NC General Assembly. The regional business community supports the efforts of the 21st Century Transportation Committee and its charge of improving mobility infrastructure in North Carolina.
