Adopt a Hot Spot Success Story 2

Miami Blvd and T.W. Alexander Drive Intersection
TW.Glen Image1Lengthy daily backups have been a growing concern for westbound T.W. Alexander Drive commuters on their way to RTP each morning. In response to a suggestion from the RTA’s “Adopt-a-Hot-Spot” program, the City of Durham reprogrammed the traffic signals at the Miami Blvd – T.W. Alexander intersection to provide substantially more green time for Alexander Drive during peak periods, thus reducing delays for Durham area residents and Triangle commuters.

HotSpot location:
Miami Blvd at T.W. Alexander Drive

Situation:
Excessive delays and significant backups on TW Alexander on the westbound through movement

Alliance suggestion:
Consider retiming the signal to provide more green time for west-bound Alexander Drive motorists

Partner agency:
City of Durham

Solution:
City of Durham traffic engineers examined the subject intersection and incorporated RTA’s suggestion to provide more green time for T.W. Alexander Dr. by reprogramming the signal controller

Result:
The signal now allows up to 40 more seconds per cycle to the through movement on T.W. Alexander while maintaining effective flow on Miami Blvd during peak periods

Immediate benefits:
Excessive daily backups and delays on TW Alexander have been largely eliminated thereby improving commuting for Triangle residents and RTP employees

RTA offers thanks to:
Chris Beasley, Dale Basden and Pete Nicholas, all with the City of Durham

City of Durham officials noted that the addition of up to 40 seconds in green time on T.W. Alexander has significantly reduced daily backups on that roadway while maintaining effective flow on Miami Blvd.

“The Alliance has been a great partner in its consistent advocacy for needed transportation improvements in Durham and throughout the Triangle,” stated Mark Ahrendsen, Director of Transportation for the City of Durham. “The City was pleased to make this signal improvement to reduce delay and improve air quality.”

TW.Glen.Image2 “The Alliance is working to create short- and long-term benefits to Triangle residents by identifying problem intersections and partnering with transportation agencies to increase the efficiency of traffic flow,” said Alliance Vice Chair Jennifer Tilden, Time Warner Cable Business Class, Raleigh. “We are pleased that our members are already experiencing the benefits of the RTA ‘Adopt-A-HotSpot’ program.”

RTA Chairman, Joe Freddoso stated that “the Alliance strives to identify, promote and accelerate mobility solutions for the Triangle region in cooperation with our public and private partners. I am glad to see our region working together to sustain our quality of life."
