Freeways/expressways

The Regional Transportation Alliance is committed to the completion of the region’s free flow highway network. Our highest priority for new construction is the completion of the Research Triangle Freeway corridor (map), which includes the completion of the Durham East End Connector, and the Research Triangle Expressway turnpike which includes the Western Wake portion of I-540 - part of the Raleigh Outer Loop - and the Triangle Parkway. Our highest priority widening project is the expansion of I-40 between Raleigh and Cary. Our freeway and expressway priorities focus on the completion of a regional free-flow highway system for automobile, truck, bus, vanpool, and carpool users, including express options.

The Alliance is seeking an Interstate designation for US 64 east of Raleigh. In addition, the Alliance also partners with the NC Department of Transportation and the NC Turnpike Authority to update signage on existing and proposed freeway sections throughout the extended Triangle region.
