RDU: Fly Faster

In March 2008 American Airlines began nonstop service between RDU and London's Heathrow Airport — the airport with the most international connections on earth. In May 2008 Southwest Airlines commences new nonstop service to Denver in May 2008. In addition, several carriers — including Airtran, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest — added new service from RDU to various Florida destinations in 2008.

Helpful flight tracking/planning tools

In early 2006, the Regional Transportation Alliance commenced a partnership with RDU Airport to enhance the air service offerings available to regional air travelers. Improving air service was identified as the number one economic development priority by the Research Triangle Regional Partnership economic development organization. Increasing the number of direct flights from RDU is also an Alliance priority, and we are happy to provide the assistance and expertise of the region's business leadership organization for transportation to this effort.

Gaining new service for our region requires a cooperative sustained effort involving the public and private sectors. In addition, once we land new service we need to remember that carriers make decisions on retaining new routes based on business performance. Our goal is to demonstrate to carriers that Triangle, eastern North Carolina, and southern Virginia fliers will patronize more convenient direct routes from RDU to the west coast and to western and central Europe.
