NC 54 east

NC 54 east of Chapel Hill is a critical regional roadway in the Triangle.   It provides the primary connection between Chapel Hill -- including the University and the hospital complex -- with I-40, RDU Airport, Research Triangle Park, and points east.

The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metro Planning Organization (DCHC MPO) recognizes the importance of the increasingly congested NC 54 and they commissioned a study during 2010 to examine the corridor from a highway, transit, and land use perspective.

In May 2010 the Alliance affirmed the regional importance of the NC 54 east corridor, supported an ongoing focus on land use and transit, and encouraged additional exploration of highway and transit elements to ensure that the short- and long-term mobility and access needs for the corridor are addressed in order to reduce congestion, enhance travel alternatives, and preserve quality of life.
