Commuter Rail
The NC Railroad Company (NCRR) is a private railroad company with all shares owned by the state of North Carolina. The NCRR's 200 foot railroad right-of-way from Charlotte to Greensboro to Raleigh to the port of Moorhead City is an incredible asset for all of North Carolina. Both freight and Amtrak passenger rail service operate along the NCRR and intersecting railways in the state.
Commuter rail is a potential rail option for connecting Durham, Research Triangle Park, Cary, Raleigh, and points east. In fall 2008 and spring 2010 the NCRR completed studies on shared capacity and ridership, respectively for potential commuter rail operation along portions of its corridor. Investment costs ranged from $2m to $15m per mile, with the highest ridership potential along the section from Durham to Wilson's Mills. Equipment and facility costs may add approximately another $5m per mile.
