After our region’s success in 2009 in gaining approval for local empowerment legislation, the focus has now turned toward the development of regional transit plans in each county in the Triangle.

The regional business community worked in cooperation with our transportation partners and elected leaders to advance the Triangle Expressway turnpike: the largest highway project in North Carolina history, a traffic signal-free alternative to congested highway 55 in western Wake and southern Durham counties and a faster way to Research Triangle Park.

RTA has hired Joe Hummer, Ph.D., PE, of Birmingham, MI to analyze the performance of controlled roundabouts -- which incorporate part-time signals upstream of a roundabout entrance to enable the "metering" of heavy flows into a roundabout. Initial results for the RTA study of controlled roundabouts are expected by May 2013.
The NC Department of Transportation is increasing the speed limit to 70 MPH on approximately 20 miles of Interstate 540 in northern Wake County. The limit will increase from the US 64/264 Knightdale Bypass west to the US 70 interchange area near Brier Creek.
