RTA June 2019 tour preview

The RTA and our western Triangle chamber partners are looking forward to our first out-of-market tour for 2019, when the regional business community travels to central and northern Virginia to learn about transit and land use in two peer markets.

From June 20 to 21, 2019 we will visit and/or learn about three different bus rapid transit systems – the Richmond Pulse, the Metroway serving Alexandria and Arlington, and the Flash BRT system currently under construction in suburban Maryland. We will also learn about and visit the Virginia Railway Express commuter rail service in northern Virginia. We will even visit a freeway cap in Richmond.

More than 50 elected officials, transportation partners, and business and community leaders have already registered to attend the tour. Attendees will learn more about transit planning, implementation, and lessons learned; land use and affordable housing near transit; station and corridor design; community engagement; and more.

The June 2019 RTA tour — held in concert with the chambers of commerce serving Durham and Chapel Hill-Carrboro — will provide new findings, insights, and perspectives as our region prepares to implement multiple bus rapid transit lines, initiate commuter rail, and update transit plans in Durham and Orange counties.

I hope that you can join us! You can register for the tour online here, or contact me or Natalie (natalie@letsgetmoving.org) with questions.

If you cannot attend the tour — or even if you can, but want some additional background on transportation in our area — make plans to attend the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce’s series at RTP event on transportation. This event will be held Friday morning, May 31st, at RTP HQ — click here to register, and contact Bryan Fox (bfox@durhamchamber.org) for more information.

I have never felt better about regional mobility — I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming RTA and partner event to help move the dialogue forward, together.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA Executive Director
