All three through lanes are now open in both directions -- six lanes total -- for the I-40 Cary/Raleigh widening project. This means that the project has achieved substantial completion, and that represents welcome relief for travelers on the most traveled freeway in our area.
Thank you to NCDOT and their contractors for accelerating this project, and for doing so in a way that truly minimized disruptions to travelers. Two lanes were kept open during the vast majority of the day throughout the duration of the project, the speed limit remained at 65 MPH, and overhead conveyors and other devices were used to keep traffic moving. Truly a remarkable project in both execution as well as completion.
Of course, thank you to NCDOT and the Capital Area MPO for approving the accelerated widening and for being open to a suggestion from the business community to advance this freeway priority. And, thank you to each RTA member for your help, support, and focus -- in less than four years we have gone from conception to all six lanes open on I-40 between Raleigh and Cary!
