RTA supports Mobility Fund proposal

June 21, 2010 - 3:00pm

Governor Perdue introduced the concept of a North Carolina Mobility Fund this spring with the immediate goal of improving the I-85/US 52 freeway at the Yadkin River bridge and the longer-term objective of providing a new source of revenue for critical transportation projects of statewide significance.

The version of the state budget passed by the House of Representatives includes a framework for commencing the North Carolina Mobility Fund, and the budget conference committee of state representatives and senators are exploring how to incorporate the fund into a final state budget for 2010-11.

The Regional Transportation Alliance supports the Mobility Fund concept passed by the House and applauds the focus on identifying a sustainable source of revenue to meet critical transportation challenges -- particularly those of statewide significance.  The Alliance is also on record as supporting improvements to the I-85/US 52 Yadkin River bridge and concurs with the proposed initial focus of Mobility Fund revenues on this project.  In addition, the Alliance supports state funding for major transit investments and the House language provides preferential consideration to projects qualified to receive state funding under the provisions of the Intermodal bill.

If you have a moment, please contact your legislator and encourage or thank them for their support of the Mobility Fund, including future preferential consideration for state support of major transit investments.
