State of Mobility—Interactive transit discussion results and presentation slides

The RTA State of Mobility 2010 event held on Wednesday, November 17 at Embassy Suites in Cary and attended by more than 200 friends of transportation featured an interactive transit discussion.  Event attendees celebrated the transportation successes of the past year and highlighted the region’s mobility priorities for 2011 that impact our mobility, economy, and quality of life.

Tables responding:  24
Total respondents for transit discussion:  189
Geographic breakdown:  Orange 5%, Durham 11%, Wake 80%, others 3%

Recent use of transit
65%
of respondents had taken a bus in the past 6 months
58% of respondents had taken a train in the past 6 months

Recent travel to RDU Airport
96% of respondents had taken a plane from RDU (or dropped someone off there) in the past 6 months

Places to serve
The top three locations for a transit system to serve were reported as:
Downtown Raleigh, RDU Airport, Research Triangle Park
(Note:  These places were each reported by more than 50 respondents.   The fourth-most reported location had fewer than 20 respondents.)

Sample illustrative scenarios
38% of tables preferred Scenario 1 (more light rail, more commuter rail, less bus)
13% of tables preferred Scenario 2 (some light rail, some commuter rail, more bus)
13% of tables preferred a mix of Scenarios 1 and 2
38% of tables could not determine a preference
70% of tables stated that they needed or would have liked additional information

Need for connection to RDU
83% of tables felt that RDU should be connected in the initial phase
17% of tables felt that RDU should be connected in a future phase
  0% of tables felt that an RDU connection was unneeded in any phase

Type of connection to RDU

of tables felt that an RDU connection must be rail
44% of tables were open to something other than rail
