RTA has endorsed two initiatives in our region on the ballot this fall, and encourages residents of Orange County and the Town of Cary to vote yes and support the continued growth and success of our region.
The Orange County transit referendum proposes a half-cent sales tax in Orange County to support new bus and enhanced bus service; an Amtrak rail station in Hillsborough; and a future light rail connection from UNC Hospital to downtown Durham. Enhanced transit options in Orange County will complement improved transit services that will be funded via last year’s successful Durham County transit referendum, and will support a regional transit plan that will serve the entire Triangle area.
The Town of Cary transportation bond referendum calls for $58 million for several transportation enhancements including traffic improvements, new signal system coordination software, bridge improvements, road widening, intersection improvements, streetscape improvements, sidewalks, bike lanes, and more. The projects would be funded by property tax increases in 2013 and 2015 which will total up to four cents for all proposed community investment bonds.
