NCDOT — I-40 widening achieves partial substantial completion

Interstate 40, the Triangle’s main street, just got a little wider this week, and in a very good way.

The I-40 widening project, which RTA has consistently supported, achieved partial substantial completion this week, with multiple new lanes in both directions between I-87/I-440 (I-40 exit 301) and US 70/future I-42 (exit 309) now open for public use. This improvement has greatly alleviated a recurring bottleneck on the freeway while providing eight miles of widened traveled way.

Kudos to NCDOT for bringing these extra lanes — and thus improved mobility — to fruition. I-40 is now ten lanes wide between exits 301 and 306 (US 70/70 business at Garner) and eight lanes wide from that point to exit 309. The widening will relieve congestion and make for an easier, more streamlined driving experience for all users on a daily basis.

While the lanes are now open for the northern section of the project, construction is not yet finished in this area, so NCDOT advises drivers to be cautious as construction activity will continue over the next few months in that area. The overall project will continue into the middle of next year, which will extend that widening south of NC 42 in Johnston County. For more information you can visit NCDOT’s website.
