An enhanced gateway to Raleigh is under construction
Lake Wheeler Road, which serves as a major access to Dix Park as well as an important connection to downtown Raleigh, is currently closed to through traffic due to the commencement of a comprehensive, multimodal upgrade and modernization project. The corridor improvement project will take around two years to complete.
When the work is done, the City will have a new “complete street” that adds parallel pedestrian and bicycle facilities as well as raised intersections on several side streets, enhances traffic flow by redirecting left turns via four roundabouts and a continuous raised median, and improves safety overall.
The corridor will also be a more attractive multimodal gateway to Dix Park and downtown.

While the project will certainly create some travel disruptions as a primary access corridor is unavailable, the result in a few years will be an enhanced gateway that serves all users better.
