The 70th Anniversary of America’s Interstate System
This week is the 250th anniversary of the founding of the American nation. It is a wonderful week to celebrate the United States, and our ongoing shared journey to create a more perfect union for all Americans.
Of course, one of the best ways to unite this great nation is with transportation. And there is probably no better example of this than the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, more popularly known as the Interstate System. It turns out that this week also marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Interstate System, when president Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1946, on June 29, 1946.
This week’s blog provides more background on the Interstates, as well as a link to a recent report by TRIP on the importance of the Interstates to North Carolina.
This region has benefited from a growing network of Interstate freeways, and RTA will continue to support the improvement and expansion of the Interstates to ensure the success of the metropolitan Triangle, and our state and nation.
RDU Airport receives top 20 national ranking
The Washington Post recently released a ranking of the best airports in America, large and small. Our hometown international airport made the top 20, so that is one more ranking of success from travelers. While the regional business community applauds this new and deserved accolade for the success of RDU, we try not to spend either too much or too little time with various rankings. However, rankings can serve as a helpful reminder that in order to be and remain successful, and to maintain a positive travel experience as we grow, we must continue to prioritize and execute essential investments in the future of our wonderful airport.
Happy birthday America, and let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
