RTA members,

For this week’s briefing, we celebrate with the City of Raleigh the completion of a needed “complete street” project, and highlight a successful RTA field visit to a very successful improvement improvement project by NCDOT. See brief articles below.

Thank you for your membership, as always, and have a great weekend.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE

The Atlantic Avenue “complete street” is complete in Raleigh

The City of Raleigh recently celebrated the completion of a comprehensive multimodal enhancement to an important north-south corridor.

The Atlantic Avenue improvement project upgraded about 1 mile of roadway in north Raleigh. This section of the street is now a “complete street” with improvements that benefit all modes of travel, including simplifying crossings for vulnerable users and a new median that provides safety, travel flow, and aesthetics.

If you live or travel that way, you know it is has been a journey of sorts to get this project to conclusion. The City has a nice summary post here. It is great to see a new multimodal complete street come to fruition, and in this case it is particularly wonderful to see this street improvement, funded by a prior City of Raleigh bond project, completed for the benefit of the community.

City of Raleigh voters have the opportunity to advance future mobility infrastructure by supporting the fall 2026 transportation bond referendum, which RTA has endorsed. See last week’s blog post for information.

US 401 field visit — an innovation that saves time and lives

Earlier this month, RTA held a field visit of US 401 North.

On October 19, several RTA members and partners had an opportunity to visit the US 401 / Mitchell Mill Road intersection, which has been simplified to a “continuous flow intersection” (CFI) configuration — the only one of its kind in the eastern half of the state. The intersection redirects left turns and simplifies the number of phases to improve mobility while enhancing safety.

NCDOT reports that this project saved about $15 million (50%) in cost versus an interchange at this location; the simplified signal phasing at this location has also dramatically reduced both travel time and queue lengths during rush hour. RTA enjoyed our field visit earlier this month, and travelers are enjoying this improvement every day. Read more in this week’s blog.
