Successful I-40 / Orange County field visit
RTA hosted our first field visit of 2026 earlier this week. On Tuesday morning, April 14, we gathered at the I-40 widening project in Orange County, an essential piece of infrastructure for our region and the entire state. As the final segment of the 200+ mile I-40/85 corridor between the Triangle and Charlotte regions that is not yet at least three lanes in each direction, this project represents a critical step toward improving connectivity, reducing congestion, and supporting continued economic growth.
During the visit, attendees received a briefing from NCDOT and contractor staff before touring several elements of project in the exit 266 interchange area.
As the Greater Raleigh Chamber noted in a briefing post earlier this week, “It’s one thing to champion infrastructure investments in policy conversations, but another to stand on-site and see that impact taking shape in real time.
The visit was an excellent opportunity for members of the business community to gain on the ground knowledge of projects and priorities that are essential to the success of our region.

The regional business community applauds our partners at NCDOT Division 7 for their vital leadership on this important multimodal freeway,
Let’s get moving,
Joe
