An enhanced gateway to Raleigh is under construction

Lake Wheeler Road, which serves as a major access to Dix Park as well as an important connection to downtown Raleigh, is currently closed so that the City can create a “complete street” corridor. You can learn more about the project in this week’s blog.

While Lake Wheeler is not a “new” street, it will feel like new in just a few years. The construction project will create some short-term travel disruptions as a primary access corridor is unavailable, but the result will be an enhanced gateway that serves all users better.

And then there were 15, and 19, and 91 — RDU expansion continues with our newest air carrier

Next month, RDU will welcome our region’s newest air carrier, Volaris, and a new international destination, Guadalajara, Mexico.

When the 3x/week service commences on October 16, that will mark our 15th international destination, our 19th air carrier, and our 91st overall destination at our region’s hometown international airport, Raleigh-Durham International.

“The nonstop service to Guadalajara on Volaris will link two dynamic and innovative regions and create new opportunities for business, collaboration and growth,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, in RDU’s release.

This is an exciting addition to the growing RDU route lineup, and it will mark the third Mexican destination served by RDU, after Mexico City and Cancun.

I-40 Partnership Annual Meeting is next month

A reminder that RTA members and partners will gather next month at the 18th annual meeting of the I-40 Regional Partnership. The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 22, at SAS Institute in Cary. The I-40 Partnership is a public-private initiative coordinated by NCDOT and RTA since 2009, with an ongoing focus on improving the operation of Interstate 40.

Given space limitations and campus security you must pre-register to attend. There is no limit on public sector registration; we request that only one representative per private sector member company sign up during the initial registration period. Register via this link.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support of regional business leadership on transportation.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
