RTA Member Briefing: September 19

RDU is back in the top 5

For the 5th time in the last 7 years, our hometown international airport has ranked in the top 5 of all large airports in the US, according to the annual passenger satisfaction survey by J.D. Power and Associates. You can learn more about the annual rankings in this week’s blog, including a note about the newest international flight from RDU.

As we noted in a weekly briefing earlier this summer and ongoing member communications and outreach, the regional business community is committed to ensuring that our region makes timely, essential, and ongoing investments in landside and airside capacity at the airport, so that RDU and our region can continue to grow successfully.

We will have more to say about this at our RTA annual meeting on Friday, January 23, 2026 from 11 am – 2 pm. Since our last major event sold out, I urge RTA members to register now, particularly as one or more tickets are always included with your RTA membership.

RDU outreach event this coming Tuesday

On Tuesday, September 23, from 4 pm – 7 pm, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority will hold the second of three drop-in style events about a potential recreation and wellness destination that may be constructed on more than 100 acres of airport property just south of I-40, adjacent to Lake Crabtree County Park. The event will be held in Raleigh at the Laurel Hills Community Center, located at the corner of Edwards Mill and Glen Eden. (There will also be an event on October 21 in RTP. Last month’s event was held in Cary; here is a link to the boards used at the first event.)

The goal of the potential project is “creating a unique destination that serves the community, respects the natural character of the site and generates revenue for the airport”.  The upcoming meeting is an opportunity for the community to learn more about the concept, offer perspectives and ideas, and interact with leaders and the preferred developer for the site (Pacific Elm Properties).

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Let’s get moving,
Joe
