Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition — the voice of the regional business community on transportation.
RTA Q1 2020 Impact Report released
This week, we provided a Quarter 1 update of RTA activities from RTA Chair Maeve Gardner with GSK. The organization has hit the ground running since the beginning of January, and we are pleased to provide our members with a brief summary of those efforts. Find the full report here in this week’s Thursday Thoughts at 3 blog, and let us know if you have any feedback.
New loop ramp from I-40 to Aviation Parkway opens this weekend
NCDOT said today that those traveling on Aviation Parkway near RDU will shift to the newly rebuilt western half of the bridge over I-40 this Sunday. At this same time, the existing loop ramps will reopen and a new loop ramp from I-40 West to southbound Aviation Parkway will open. Kudos to NCDOT for their continued work on this project; the new loop ramp will simplify the traffic signal operations at the interchange and save drivers time between I-40 and RDU.
Interstate 87 – why it matters, why we support it
RTA has supported an Interstate designation for US 64 east of Raleigh for 15 years. We have successfully lobbied with a host of elected and other partners for a primary, two-digit interstate designation, I-87, which will link Raleigh to Norfolk; I-87 is already designated from Raleigh to Wendell. There is an article in several eastern North Carolina newspapers this week on I-87 and other future interstates; I mentioned to the reporter that the branding created by a future Interstate designation clarifies conversations and provides essential focus for elected officials, business leaders, and the public around the projects and policies needed to advance the Interstate corridor.
Thank you for your investment in the regional business voice on transportation!
Let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
