Member Briefing: March 11, 2022

Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition – the voice of the regional business community on transportation.

Upcoming in-person RTA General Membership Meeting
We will have our next RTA General Membership meeting on Tuesday, May 17 for an in-person celebration of the I-885/Durham East End Connector which opens this summer. This event, which will be held in concert with RTA founding chamber the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, will be an outstanding, outside opportunity to visit the project and hear from our NCDOT leaders who are bringing this vital multimodal freeway to our region.

The I-885 Durham East End Connector, which was first introduced in the 1950s, was RTA’s top priority for several years until its groundbreaking in 2014. We have often referred to it as the Triangle Connector to I-85 to emphasize its regional importance. You can register online now for the May 17 event; please note that the rain date will be May 19, so mark your calendar for both 5/17 and 5/19. Either way, this RTA General Membership Meeting event will begin at 10 am.

RTA would also like to thank everyone who attended our online RTA General Membership meeting last month, where we heard from RDU CEO Mike Landguth and officially launched our campaign for a new runway. If you have not yet filled out this short form to sign-up (i.e., to commit to sending a letter of support for the runway later this spring), please take a minute now and do so.

RTA South Florida trip at capacity
We currently have 80 registrations for the upcoming RTA Regional Leadership tour to South Florida — which is actually more than we had registered for our original January dates — and are now effectively at capacity. As a result, we have closed online registration for the tour, and have activated our tour waitlist.

We thank the leadership of our honorary tour co-chairs Mary-Ann Baldwin, Mayor of Raleigh; NCDOT Secretary of Transportation Eric Boyette; and RTA chair Harold Hicks with RTI International. RTA looks forward to our 13th regional leadership tour later this month that will highlight mobility initiatives, innovations, and perspectives to inform our thinking, and our future.

Thank you, as always, for your commitment to sustained regional business leadership on mobility.

Let’s get moving,

Joe
