Member Briefing: May 20, 2022

Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition – the voice of the regional business community on transportation.

RTA, Durham Chamber, and NCDOT celebrate imminent opening of I-885 …  on I-885 itself
RTA held our general membership meeting earlier this week in concert with the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce and NCDOT — and we held it right on the (almost open) I-885 East End Connector!

The project was first proposed in 1959 and it took 56 years before the project was able to break ground with construction beginning in 2015. The I-885 Connector — which RTA has referred to as the “Triangle Connector” for more than a decade — will provide a direct linkage between Downtown Durham and the Durham Freeway (N.C. 147) and Miami Boulevard (U.S. 70) and increase accessibility to both I-85 and I-40.

I-885 is slated to open on June 30; the Triangle’s newest Interstate will be a game-changing addition to our multimodal freeway system. Read more about the meeting and some of history behind this almost six-decade project in this week’s blog

Thank you to NCDOT for their leadership in growing our regional freeway network, and thank you to each of our members for your ongoing dedication to regional business leadership on mobility.

Let’s get moving,

Joe
RTA Executive Director
