RTA Member Briefing: April 4

RTA members and partners,

Cleaning up the roadways

The NCDOT semiannual Litter Sweep event begins next week, starting on Saturday, April 12. This spring’s event is North Carolina’s statewide roadside litter removal initiative, spearheaded by NCDOT, to help clean up roadways across North Carolina. NCDOT provides volunteer groups with cleanup supplies including gloves, safety vests, and reversible orange (trash) / blue (recycling) bags.

You can learn more about this effort to reduce litter on roadways across our region and state — and complementary Adopt-a-Highway and Sponsor-a-Highway initiatives — in this week’s RTA blog.

Q2 2025 begins

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, April 1st, RTA Leadership Team members participated in an online briefing to jumpstart the spring quarter. We highlighted a number of critical initiatives underway including accelerating the US 1 / Capital Freeway and lobbying for associated legislation needed for tolling the corridor; advancing regional BRT linkages including an I-40 exchange station at RDU and freeway BRT along I-40 and I-885; the potential for freeway caps to reconnect communities; implementation of smart freeways and dynamic left turn intersections to reduce delay, and more.

We will also continue to focus on opportunities to streamline, shore up, and expand funding and financing for vital regional mobility initiatives. These include advancing access user fees as a more resilient state transportation funding source; the potential for a county, regional, or statewide mobility infrastructure bank to advance projects and get ahead of inflation; lobbying pushes to secure federal funding for projects ranging from airport infrastructure to bus rapid transit; and tactical improvements across all modes to get quicker wins and bring down the cost curve. Future blogs and weekly briefings will highlight specifics on these and other priorities, including opportunities for engagement.

Thank you as always for your membership.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
