Member Briefing: April 1, 2021

Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition — the voice of the regional business community on transportation.

NC passenger train services to resume full schedule
On Monday, all NC By Train services will resume their full schedules, after a year of limited operation in response to the coronavirus. Our stations in Downtown Durham, Downtown Cary, and Downtown Raleigh, will once again have four daily trains in each direction connecting the Triangle, the Triad, and Charlotte; one of those trains also connects NC with D.C. and New York. Later this summer, Amtrak will also restore a fifth train serving Raleigh and Cary that runs from New York to Miami. You can learn more about NC passenger rail services, and purchase tickets, online here.

Interstate upgrades to begin on US 70 in Johnston County
This spring, NCDOT will begin improving 5 miles of US 70 in Johnston County as part of the upgrade of US 70 to Interstate 42 between the Triangle and the Crystal Coast. The creation of new interchanges with bridges and ramps, and the elimination of all traffic signals on the stretch, will improve travel times, reliability, and safety. Linking Garner with Morehead City, and the state port with I-40, the continued development of I-42 is essential for the success and quality of life for communities in Johnston and Wayne counties along the corridor, including Clayton, Smithfield, Selma, and Goldsboro.

We wish each of our members a happy holiday weekend! Thank you for your investment in RTA.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA Executive Director
